Regency Sensibilities
In the heart of Cheltenham’s Montpellier district lies a gem of Regency architecture: The family home of Sam Reid with her husband, teenage daughter and two young sons.
Stepping through the doors of this exquisite townhouse, you are immediately captivated by the interplay of light and space. The generously proportioned rooms and high ceilings are further expanded by a colour palette of sophisticated off-whites and neutrals. Points of detail that have been meticulously curated by Sam exude a sense of tranquility and refinement. Natural materials such as wood and marble add both warmth and texture to the immaculate surroundings.
As Sam shares her insights into the design journey of her home, it is immediately apparent that her considered approach extends well beyond aesthetics. With a deep respect for the heritage of her Regency townhouse, Sam approached each design choice with sensitivity and respect. From the restoration of period features to the careful selection of furnishings and lighting, every decision was made with the intention of preserving the spirit of the building. Through her discerning eye and unwavering dedication, Sam has not only created a place of harmonious beauty but also paid homage to the rich history and architectural legacy of her beloved home.
We had the privilege of sitting down with Sam to delve into the inspiration behind her impeccable style and her choice to use Lam Lighting:.
It’s very rare to see such a perfect balance of modern luxury and authentic period design. What drew you to the aesthetic choices of your home?
We knew we wanted to keep the look of the house calm and pretty neutral, thus enhancing the original fixtures and fittings. Also we wanted the history of the house to shine through, but for it to be a modern workable home.
Can you share your vision for the lighting design in your home.
We wanted the house to flow, so almost all lighting needed to complement one another. We were very lucky to inherit a few chandeliers from the previous owners and it can be very hard to incorporate other lights without it looking a little too much. Lam Lighting and the simplicity and natural tones do just that.
There are details of natural materials that punctuate specific spaces. How have you achieved this?
Lighting makes these natural materials shine. Literally! Without lighting and different types of lighting materials and surfaces can look dull and without depth.
Can you explain how you achieved this sense of classic modern design?
Choosing simple, elegant and timeless lighting adds to the longevity. Nothing too trend led as this is only around for a short time.
Could you highlight any favourite Lam Lighting fixtures in your home?
Ooh that’s tough, so many options!
I’d say, the Flatford Plug-In range works well for us. Especially the Cottage and Giselle designs. I love how the brass fixings and stunning cream cord just add a little bit extra to an otherwise bare wall. Also the Bronte Multi Pendant, the shape and tone of the clay is just beautiful and seemingly works in all of our spaces.
