The Ballet Collection
Our new collection of pendants are inspired by the magical world of ballet, made up of three designs in two sizes; The Fonteyn, The Giselle and The Odette, we share our ideas and inspiration behind the concept.
The theatre can carry us away to another world, transporting us in to a dream. For us, ballet is the most beautiful and dream-like expression of all of the performing arts. A discipline that requires dedication in abundance, for dancers to achieve exquisite movement, unwavering technical precision and delicate grace. It continues to inspire film directors, photographers, fashion designers and musicians alike. Whilst theatre is tentatively emerging from this difficult time, we are proud to be a part of the long-standing love affair with ballet.
The silhouette of the dancer and her costume, the movement of her body and the tutu, the luminance of a single ballerina lit up on stage – she in herself becomes a radiant point of light.
The pendants share their silhouettes with three iconic ruched tulle tutus; the pleated ‘pancake’, the classical ‘bell’ tutu and the flat ‘platter’ skirt. Hand-crafted by our master craftsperson, each one is delicately sculpted, taking on a unique form – lasting not just for a fleeting moment in dance, but for a lifetime.
‘Dancing Light’ is a short film that we set about making to show both the lights and the inspiration behind them. We wanted to create a visual ode to the world of ballet, taking on the perspective of the dancer.
One all-important aspect was the tutu. An authentic, traditional tutu was incredibly difficult to source. We commissioned a beautiful, 18th century costume. The final design used over 120 metres of vintage tulle.
Rehearsals with our dancer began in a local dance studio and the actual shoot over-ran, taking us to 3am. We were amazed not just at the dancer’s ability to create beautiful movement, but that she had the stamina to do it consistently and repeatedly, for such an extended period. She takes us on a visual journey through her mind – dancing alone in a isolated studio then seamlessly on to the stage in a beautiful theatre, surrounded by lights that subtly follow her movements. We hear some of her inner thoughts, describing how dancing makes her feel – perhaps in her memory, perhaps in the present.
