Transforming a 1950s Bungalow into a Modern Vintage Home
Sophie Brooks has reimagined a 1950s bungalow into a stunning modern-vintage family home. Collaborating with her husband and inspired by her two daughters, Sophie’s vision was to create a space that seamlessly blends contemporary open-plan living with timeless, artisanal craftsmanship. The result is a beautifully curated home filled with light, character, and warmth — she has woven a collection of Lam Lighting designs throughout.
A Focus on Purity and Simplicity
Sophie’s design ethos aligns perfectly with our philosophy. Our raw, unglazed Limoges porcelain lights celebrate purity of materials and simplicity in form. From the entrance hallway to the bedrooms, each lighting choice reflects Sophie’s commitment to clean lines, understated elegance, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
The Entrance Hallway: A Charming First Impression
Visitors are greeted with a thoughtfully designed entrance hallway featuring the Bergholt Cottage wall lights and Cottage pendants. The combination of these fixtures creates an inviting, layered ambience. The soft off-white tones of the porcelain lights harmonise with the neutral colour palette, setting the tone for the rest of the home. “The hallway is the first thing you see,” Sophie explains. “I wanted it to feel light and calm, like a gentle invitation into our home.”
The Living Room and Playroom: Subtle Drama and Geometric Elegance
The living room and adjoining playroom showcase the Flatford Millais wall lights. The geometric wall brackets of the Flatford Millais wall lights bring a quiet sophistication to the space. Meanwhile, the Flush Fitting Millais, with its fluted glass and faceted design, creates a jewel-like focal point on the ceiling. Sophie shares, “The Millais lights add a touch of glamour to the room without feeling overdone. They’re elegant and practical, which is exactly what we needed.”
Upstairs Landing: A Play on Scale and Light
The upstairs landing is a testament to clever lighting design. Sophie chose the Cottage Multi-Pendant light to span the double-height aspect of the landing, with its three tiers creating a dramatic yet harmonious statement. Single Cottage pendants are thoughtfully positioned within the vaulted ceiling’s apexes, enhancing the architectural features of the space. “The landing was a tricky area to light,” Sophie admits, “but the multi-pendant made it feel cohesive and special. It’s one of my favourite parts of the house.”
The Guest Bedroom: Bold Simplicity
For a guest bedroom, Sophie made a bold yet effortlessly stylish decision to use Flush Fitting Giselle lights. The fluted shades provide a delicate touch to the high ceilings, balancing boldness with softness. The result is a tranquil and refined retreat. “The Giselle lights are perfect for the bedroom,” Sophie notes. “They’re understated yet full of character, which makes the space feel unique.”
Children’s Bedrooms: Playful and Practical
The bedrooms of Sophie’s daughters reflect their personalities while maintaining the home’s cohesive style. In one room, a Giselle pendant pairs beautifully with a plug-in Bergholt Petite Giselle wall light. This thoughtful addition solves the challenge of limited wiring while providing a practical and charming reading light over the bed. The youngest daughter’s room, affectionately called her “princess haven,” features a Petite Giselle pendant, adding a touch of whimsy and elegance. Sophie shares, “The girls love their rooms. The lights bring a soft glow that makes the spaces feel magical and cosy.”
Sophie’s Reflections
Sophie Brooks reflects on her lighting choices: “For me, lighting is everything. It’s not just functional; it sets the mood and highlights the details that make a house a home. I wanted every room to feel intentional, and Lam Lighting helped me achieve that with their beautiful designs. I was drawn to the honesty and craftsmanship of their lights. The raw porcelain is stunning in its simplicity, and the designs work perfectly in both contemporary and vintage-inspired spaces. They’ve become such an integral part of our home’s personality.”
