The Architecture of Calm

Through winding country lanes, Holly Bush House reveals itself quietly among the Shropshire hills. Sheep graze in the neighbouring fields and, on the morning of our visit, a soft mist rested gently along the tops of the green slopes beyond.

It is hard to imagine that this elegant cottage was once almost hidden beneath blackberry and hawthorn. What stands today is calm, balanced and beautifully resolved.

John and Jo welcomed us warmly. Their home reflects them both, thoughtful, generous and quietly confident. Much of the restoration has been shaped by John’s own hands, while Jo’s love of ballet and movement brings a softness that flows throughout the interiors. Bronze ballerinas rest on window sills. Sculptural nods to dance appear in corners throughout. There is strength here, but also poise.

At the heart of the cottage is the double height kitchen. Light pours in from two floors of original windows on both sides, with roof lights above adding to the sense of air and openness.

Two Giselle multi pendants cascade through the void, their ballet-inspired porcelain shades descending gracefully through the space. They seem to float rather than hang, settling gently above the height of the original ground floor ceiling.

Two single Giselle pendants sit perfectly aligned above the white marble island. Their placement feels measured and calm. Porcelain, brass and timber sit comfortably together.

Along the exposed brick wall, we placed a flush fitting Giselle styled as a wall sconce to complement the texture of the masonry. It is a small detail, but one that quietly enhances the space.

On the dining side of the room, where the ceiling lowers and the atmosphere becomes more intimate, a single Gainsborough pendant hangs above the round table, its handblown glass shade catching the light from the dual aspect windows. A place for conversation, for everyday meals and for gathering.

Adjacent to the kitchen, the snug offers a gentle retreat. Lower ceilings and a woodburner make this room feel grounded and relaxed.

A flush fitting Cottage is installed directly onto an oak beam, simple and unassuming. It brings light without fuss, without detracting from the textures of timber, linen and woven baskets.

Even the most practical spaces have been thoughtfully considered. In the boot room, we styled a flush fitting Giselle that brings softness to built in cabinetry and oak detailing. A single gang Brass and Porcelain toggle switch sits neatly nearby, echoing the materials used throughout the cottage.

Two traditional Bergholt linen wall lights cast a warm and welcoming glow above a simple console table. It feels gentle and assured, a quiet introduction to the home without giving away the open plan space beyond.

One of the hidden gems of Holly Bush House is the bathing area within the master bedroom. Positioned beneath a sloping ceiling and framed by countryside views, it feels both indulgent and peaceful.

A Grand Giselle pendant hangs above the freestanding bath, its scalloped porcelain form poised against the simplicity of the space. On the wall, a flush fitting Grand Giselle repeats the silhouette, reinforcing the calm rhythm found throughout the house.
