Lam Lighting at The Margate Galley
Light is integral to everything we do
We are lighting designers. We have designed for some of the most popular lighting companies around the world for over 20 years, before forming Lam Lighting in 2021. But our relationship with lighting goes even further than that. We have over 30 years combined experience as professional photographers and image makers.
We are always looking for those dream interiors, the perfect locations for photography – beautiful homes and unique spaces that will perfectly showcase the lights. Our shoots have taken us to elegant period homes, traditional country cottages and stylish townhouses – each interior is unique, and their individual character shapes the images that we create.
Raw Beauty & Rustic Charm
When we stumbled upon The Margate Galley in a style-leading interiors magazine, we were immediately taken by its raw beauty and rustic charm. It has been sensitively designed and renovated by creative husband and wife team, Julia & Calum. They have taken great care in creating this unique space that is beautiful from every angle, and when the sun hits just right, it is nothing short of enchanting.
It is described by the couple as ‘a calm beach-loft that combines the building’s character with a warm bohemian charm, full of raw textures.’ The soft pink hue of exposed plaster flows throughout the entire house, the floor is stripped back to the original, rustic wooden floorboards. This conscious decision to reveal the raw beauty of these materials resonated with us. It is the same philosophy that we adopt with our lights. Just as the walls have been left unpainted and the floors without carpet – our porcelain is left unglazed to allow its beautiful, natural luminosity to interplay with the light. Purity of materials, simplicity in form.
‘Calm’ is perhaps the most apt description of The Margate Galley. Situated a short walk from the charming town centre, it is remarkably quiet – the only recurring noise for hours is seagulls, serving as a blissful reminder that the sea is so close by. A winding piece of driftwood sits quietly against the wall, casting a soft shadow of its natural form, slowly changing as the sun moves on. The television is cleverly concealed in an antique cabinet, encouraging you to take a step back from technology and enjoy the surroundings which although fleeting, feel like home.
The Eco-sensitive measures enchance your sense of well-being throughout the Margate Galley. There are no single-use plastics. The kitchen is equipped with a coffee machine and a box of Grind pods – organic coffee in a home-compostable, plastic free shell. The bathrooms are kitted out with luxurious Meraki and Aesop products, renowned for their beautifully natural ingredients and fragrances.
Playing with three different schemes here, each one is successful in its own right. Using the Plug-In Nayland Wall Light is a great way to create balance with the pre-wired wall light on the right, without disturbing the existing plastered finish. The glass shades create statement lighting without closing down the space and give a bright ambient light. Combining them with porcelain wall lights is another way of creating different looks, while the lights still feel cohesive with the porcelain elements throughout. The Bronté lights are more directional, which give the space an intimate atmosphere with beautiful pools of light.
This is an alternative lighting set up for the main living area, where we use the Giselle style throughout. The Giselle pendant in the centre of the room was complimented by the Nayland Petite Giselle Wall Lights. A blend of elegant yet rustic elements – perfect to enhance the bohemian features.
This stairwell space is the perfect opportunity to vertically layer light with a triple Constable pendant.
The Heathcliff is based on lighting designs from as early as the industrial revolution. It is a perfect way to create a heritage look but in the luxury, ethical material of our signature, unglazed porcelain.
We added little spots of detail throughout the interior with plug-in pendants. These can be casually slung on hooks, beams or posts, where the light itself then becomes a feature.
